Quick Tips for Meditation on the Go

Meditation is an ancient ritual performed by countless people every hour of every day. Many have this idea that they must have space and silence, which is the only way to achieve that inner stillness. I think that is ideal but realistically that isn’t an option for many people who have busy lives or constant distractions and work and home. However, these exact people are likely to get the most benefit from the practice as they likely suffer from an enormous amount of stress. For those individuals seeking a bit of peace, quiet, and inner reflection in their daily lives, don’t give up on meditation. There are some other options besides the silent room.

Regardless of how much time you have or whether or not you have a special spot to work in you can still find ways to devote time to meditation. Practicing meditation can be done literally anywhere, some chose their homes, offices, hotel rooms, bathtubs, airplane, train, or bus. In order to achieve a break from distractions you may need to bring along ear buds or noise cancelling headphones.

Meditation does not have to take a lot of time. I’d suggest blocking off 20 minutes to start. With 5 minutes of winding down, 15 minutes of meditation, and 5 minutes of gratitude, stretching and closing the practice. Try dedicating this small period each day to your personal happiness and growth. Mornings are excellent for meditation, if you’ve only recently woken up then you are likely still at ease, your home is likely at its quietest and the energy of the new day will be adding to the experience. If you have a balcony where you can sit outside and enjoy the morning sun or breeze that would be a wonderful option too. To achieve this, you might need to consider waking up before everyone else for some alone time.

If you enjoy a long shower or bath, you can also try meditating during this time. With a bath you can add Epson salts, light candles, play music and drift away in the warm sudsy water. In a shower you can do visualization techniques, imagining the water washing your worries and negativity away.

If meditation at home is not an option, then consider doing it during your commute. If you travel by train, bus, or any other form of transportation where you aren’t necessarily driving then this would be a good time to get some inner peace. There are lots of amazing, guided meditations that you can plug into. Check out YouTube and find one that resonates with you. As a beginner, guided meditations can make the process much easier and give you a place to start. This is up to you. I’d say it’s worth a try to see how you like it. Remember, check out a few as there are lots of teachers in the world but not all of them are meant for you.

Another way to meditate while on the go or commuting is channeling. We will get into that later. If you are a writer, grab a journal and pen that feels good to work with and begin to write out your thoughts. Whatever thoughts enter your mind write them down. It doesn’t have to be a perfect verse of even rhyme. Just let yourself be free and write. Try to quiet your mind and write out what comes to you.

People who are always on the go and travelling may see more hotel rooms than their own homes. If this is the case that is okay. You can always bring a little of your personal space with you. This little package might include a few crystals, an essential oil, pictures, or tokens of home. Make a small spot in the hotel room with comfy pillows and a soft blanket to be your place or solace. That is only one of the amazing things about meditation, there is only one thing you need, and that is you.

If you are finding meditating alone either impossible or you don’t like it there are options as well. Online there are lots of meditation groups that you can join. Look into your local community centers to see if there are any meditation groups accepting new members. If money isn’t an issue for you, you can also consider hiring an experienced meditation instructor. They will be able to work specifically on helping you to set and accomplish your personal goals of meditation and inner exploration.
