How to Connect with Your Spirit Guides


It is my belief that communicating with Spirit Guides is a sacred practice. Something to be honoured and appreciated with love and gratitude. This doesn’t mean that you can’t ask your spirit guide questions throughout the day however when you chose to have an actual session and speak with your spirit guide, I feel it is important to treat it with respect and follow some guidelines.


This is only my personal preference, you may feel differently and that is entirely up to you. One thing I would strongly recommend however is to ensure that whenever you work with beings you seek spiritual protection. It is always a wise idea. To begin, I like to prepare myself and my space. If possible, I like to take some time to relax. Rushing home after work and slipping in a channelled session between cooking dinner and finishing up a load of laundry is not ideal. If possible, try to find some time you can truly dedicate to the practice of channeling. Perhaps you may want to consider having a nice shower, brushing your teeth, and having a nice cool glass of water before you begin.


Create a little sacred space by lighting a candle, and maybe smudging or burning incense or some aromatherapy. Take time to relax your breathing and your mind. Visualize white, beautiful light radiating from your heart center. Set your intention for protection and to work with beings of light. Breathe deeply and focus on the breath until you find yourself in a calm and relaxed state.



When you are relaxed, comfortable, and your mind is clear, start to ask your guides to join you. You can do this out loud or in your head whichever makes you feel most comfortable. You may prefer to call the guide an angel instead, once again whatever feels right for you. If this is the first time, it may feel a little awkward but it will get easier with time and practice.


Once again, the experience may be different for everyone. You may see in your mind’s eye a figure coming towards you. You may hear a voice. Or you may feel a presence in the room. In fact, if it’s your first time you might not feel anything at all. Keep practicing and listening, it will come.


When you begin to feel a connection, take a moment to sense how you are feeling. If you feel safe and comfortable then open your heart up to connecting with them. At this point, you will likely feel the energy flowing through you and around you. You may feel the room getting warmer. Try to focus on the message and connection that you are feeling with this being of light.



There are some that like to imagine a beam of light flowing between you and your guide from heart to heart and third eye to third eye. However, I think this is a bit more advanced for your first time. Once again, go with the flow. Do what feels right and use your intuition to guide you.


This process of connecting with your guide is a way for you to blend your energies together. There is nothing to be afraid of as you’ve already created protection around yourself. You should be able to feel if there is anything making you not comfortable in the situation. Let your heart guide you.


Your guides simply want to connect with you and offer you their love and guidance. The more comfortable you can be with them the better connection you will have but take it easy on yourself. If this is your first time don’t expect a lot. My first time, I literally heard two words and that was all.


As you connect to your guide you should start to feel comfortable, soothed, and uplifted. Like a comforting hug from a beloved family member. Your guides are of the highest light and always come in with tremendous loving energy.


It might also be a good idea to bring along a paper and pen to write down any messages you receive. I like to channel with my eyes closed although I’m able to now do it with them open. However, I’ll normally sit with the pen in my hand and start writing what I’m being told. Then try to decipher my scribbles once the session is over. That gets easier with time too.


If you feel any fear or you’re uncomfortable, that’s okay. At this point, I’d recommend closing the session and trying again later. It might be a good idea at some point to meditate on why you felt afraid. This is also why it’s a good idea to start every session with a protection prayer to give you the added level of comfort of knowing you are protected and working with a being of light.
